SUMMARY:12th Annual Scare Brain Cancer Away 5K Run/Walk and 1.5 Mile Walk - VIRTUAL
DESCRIPTION:COVID-19 might have turned our world upside-down\, but it can’t scare us away from raising money for the Wilmot Cancer Institute’s Patient Needs Fund. So we’re doing a virtual event in 2020! You and your team will be able to dress up and run or walk a 5K or 1.5 mile route ON YOUR OWN. \nWe will be offering our long sleeve t-shirt and hope to have additional goodies that will be announced soon! \nCutoff to guarantee a shirt on race day is October 3. All others will be mailed out a few weeks after race day. \nPacket pickup for the event will be Thursday and Friday October 22 and 23rd at Medved Running and Walking Outfitters. \nRunners can run their race anytime between October 24 and Halloween! Submit your time online here at this site and signup for notifications to make submitting your time a breeze. \nThe Patient Needs Fund is a donation-based fund for patients under cancer treatment at the Wilmot Cancer Institute. Assistance can be provided to patients in the form of gift cards to local gas\, grocery\, and general merchandise stores such as Kwik Fill\, Wegmans\, and Target. Often patients need money for gas as many are driving from outside or on the outskirts of Monroe County for treatment daily or weekly. Target and Wegmans gift cards are typically used for food or everyday needs of patients. The amount provided is based upon the patient’s needs; as many patients as possible can be assisted with a donation to this unique fund. This is the power of the Patient Needs Fund; patients are able to focus more on their treatment and fighting cancer\, and not on the financial burden that so many of us have.

We were able to donate $30\,000 to the Wilmot Cancer Institute for use by individuals suffering from this dreaded disease. We will once again be hosting this event on Saturday\, October 19th\, which is part of the Runner of the Year series. \nMark your calendars and come out to run a fast flat course while being cheered on by residents of the community. Then enjoy a vast array of food that is FREE! DESCRIPTION:This is a fast flat course through the village of East Rochester being very well marked with 2 water stops. The race is a part of the “Rochester Runner of the Year Series” and receives outstanding support from residents that cheer participants to the finish line. \nThis will be the tenth year for this annual event in which funds raised from this go directly to an individual or individuals suffering from this terrible disease. This year funds will go to the “Patient Needs Fund” at the Wilmot Cancer Institute. Assistance can be provided to patients in the form of gift cards for gas\, groceries and general merchandise from stores such as Wegmans and Target. Participating can help to set a PR or the opportunity to run or walk for a great cause. Come dressed in a costume for an opportunity to win a gift certificate to a local restaurant. SUMMARY:Ninth Annual Scare Brain Cancer Away 5K Run/Walk
DESCRIPTION:This is a fast flat course through the village of East Rochester. It is very well marked with 2 water stops and tons of support from the residents of the village. \nThis race is a run/walk with funds going to an individual suffering from brain cancer. Tonya Cyrkin will be this year’s recipient. Tonya is the wife of Josh and mother of Alex and 9th grader Haylie. Diagnosed in 2012 with a glioblastoma\, Tonya’s brain cancer has taken a different path\, that being to attack her spine. Doctors had been at a loss as to how to proceed in treating her cancer as chemo and radiation had not been successful. The tumor on her spine had continued to grow and so it was decided that the best approach would be to remove part of her spine\, which was done on October 6\, 2016. Tonya is working with OT and PT specialists and because of her determination to become more independent and have a somewhat normal life as a family\, she is known as a “rock star”.
