Benefit This race benefits Desiree Stockholm, a 30-year-old Nurse Practicioner in Rochester who’s suffering from a rare form of Brain Cancer. Desiree is a kind and hard-working professional and she needs our help! Here is her story:

Hello, my name is Desiree and I am 30 years old and a resident of the Rochester, NY community. I work as a Nurse Practitioner in Neurology and I love what I get to do every day. In January 2013, I was working with patients and developed a severe headache and vision problems that was accompanied by vomiting. I went to the Emergency Department and had both a CT and an MRI scan, which revealed the source of my symptoms. I was diagnosed with a rare type of brain cancer called Pineal Parenchymal Tumor of Intermediate Differentiation, grade II, that has metastasized within my brain. I proceeded to have a 15 day stay in the ICU following my diagnosis. During that stay, I had brain surgery for a biopsy and placement of a VP shunt. After I was released from the hospital, I developed a large blood clot in my left leg. The clot was nearly the length of my leg and I was put on blood thinners daily for treatment. I have also endured a month and a half of radiation treatments to my brain. I had brain surgery on July 16th to remove the larger tumor in my brain, which was a success. During my surgical course I developed a second blood clot, this time in my right leg. I had a repeat MRI in September which showed no tumors remaining in my brain. My next treatment plan includes 6 months of chemotherapy by mouth at home. Not including traveling costs, I have an out-of-pocket co-pay expense of $30,000 after insurance coverage.
