Information
  • Our USTAF certified course is situated in a wetland preserve, but is not your typical “trail run.” The terrain is relatively flat, with a stone dust path and awesome native wildflowers, wildlife and ponds surrounding the course. And although it’s a wetland preserve, we build up the trail for race day, so even if the weather has been rainy, the course will be relatively dry.
  • Proceeds from the 5K Race for Hunger benefit the House of Concern, a very active, local food pantry that services hundreds of families in need.
  • Food and beverage spread is free to all runners.

About the Beneficiary

This race benfits 38-year-old Tobi O’Duffy from Conesus NY. Tobi has a loving husband, two daughters and a son.

In 1997, she began to suffer from constant dull headaches and nose bleeds – the early signs of a brain tumor called Anaplastic Oligodendroglioma of the Brain. The tumor was the size of a baseball and in the motor and speech parts of her brain. It was a slow growing tumor and was benign, they could not take it all out so Tobi had radiation therapy. Tobi then got married on schedule in June of 1998 and began having children. She would go for MRI’s every six months, then every year and we thought we were clear. The doctors told her if it were to grow back it would in 7 years and if we made it past 10 years it was unlikely to grow back.

Then 16 1/2 years later Tobi began to have weakness on the right side of her body and started to have small seizures. The doctors were unclear if it was scar tissue from radiation or a cyst in the original tumor cavity. They all felt that surgery would be the best to remove what ever was applying pressure in the brain. During surgery on March 11th, 2014 they discovered that it was tumor and there was much more then they could see on a MRI. They removed 80% of the tumor. The doctors then checked the pathology and it turned out to be Grade 3 Cancer. This type of cancer is aggressive and so they started Radiation and Chemotherapy together four weeks after the surgery. Tobi is about to start 6-12 months of chemotherapy.

Also, in light of the horribly tragic police shooting on September 3, we have decided that we are going to donate a dollar for each person who registers for the Scare Brain Cancer Away 5K to Amy Pierson. Amy is the wife of Daryl Pierson, the Rochester police officer who was shot and killed on Wednesday, September 3, 2014. She and her two children reside in our hometown of East Rochester.
